In its purest form, storage virtualisation allows administrators to add storage capacity using inexpensive, commodity disk and tape drives and to dynamically manage those storage resources as virtual storage pools. Physical storage capacity is automatically and proportionately allocated based on real-time usage needs. Additional physical capacity can be installed as it becomes necessary without any interruption of operations. Virtual disk appear to the user or application as an ordinary local disk. Storage virtualisation allows the storage administrator to reassign virtual disks effortlessly without making physical modifications to the hardware or disrupting running applications. Storage virtualisation is driven by the necessity to simplify storage management as storage capacity and storage devices proliferate.
